Now here is a rare piece of Western Massachusetts history. This is a unique mandolin was made by Alexander Ricard (b.1861 - d.1931) in Springfield, MA - a luthier of French descent and originally a cabinet maker and woodcarver most famous for his violin work and fine mandolins and concert ukuleles. He used an oil varnish of his own make, in the different shades of yellow, brown and red. This particular piece has had some cracks repaired in its recent history and has received a setup/restring here in our repair shop. It boasts and big sound with a warm tone and articulation closely related to a Gibson A of a similar era. Included is a solid hardshell case.
