Damn! This is the one! 1978 Guild D-35 Bluegrass, one of the great iconic Guild models from the Westerly factory years!

There's some acoustic guitars that have their sound and feel referred to as being "like a piano," and this is one of those ones that feels like you're playing a huge Steinway Grand piano in a music hall. Much like a Steinway grand, it's pretty much good for everything and everyone. They just leave it in the music hall and everyone from Elton John to Phillip Glass to Fiona Apple all totally love it, because it totally rules. Huge tone and power and a stunningly beautiful appearance and presence, this guitar is an unshaven George Clooney showing up to the Met gala being both sophisticated and ruggedly handsome.

Thank you for getting this far in the guitar description, past the part where I describe George Clooney as being simultaneously sophisticated and ruggedly handsome. It should be known that this guitar is both sophisticated and ruggedly handsome. It is a finely tuned machine that booms loud like a double bass in the low register and high and sweet like a silver flute in the upper register, seriously it's awesome. If you want to play big everyman style Bill Withers or Jackson Browne chords, it's got you. If you want to aggressively shred some Lindsey Buckingham, it's got you. If you want to play sweet lightly picked Joni songs, it's got you. This guitar, seriously more any other guitar, has a way of adapting to a player and then it's just that person's favorite guitar that they never forget. It brings out the best in them. You hang out with George Clooney, so sophisticated and rugged that he is, and you leave the conversation so inflated about how many questions he asked you about yourself over the course of the evening. Guitars can be the same way. As you put energy into a guitar, it can come back to you bigger and stronger than you put into it and you start finishing each other's thoughts. It should be a back and forth that builds up a charge. My main guitar I've had since I was 17 is a 2001 Guild, the LAST year of the Westerly guitars, and it's the only one that's always been with me since the day I got it. Guilds are relationship material. They say it's the mind not the body of partner that will help you raise your children together, so choose wisely. What this George Clooney guitar is trying to say is...maybe you can have both lol? This is an "all this and brains" guitar. Sophisticated, Rugged, PHD in some kind of niche science that pays well and is in high demand with flexible hours so you can spend quality time together. Serious relationship material.

Once again thanks for getting through that last paragraph. Let's talk about this guitar. As an instrument, it freaking rules. Neck is straight as an arrow, it honestly didn't even need an adjustment after probably 10 years of never being played which is amazing. it plays so great. There's huge tone and power that bring out new ideas and chord shapes, it's got an endless amount of songs in it. The finish is in overall really great condition, there's a few scuffs here and there, but you can see that it definitely looks fresh and lively. The neck feels awesome, both the size and the feel and texture on the back. Frets have years of life, Guild frets last longer than other frets in my experience and these are basically unplayed. Super cool heavy duty Guild tuners, it's a class act from head to toe.

I absolutely love this guitar, don't know if you can tell. It has beaten out my 2001 Guild which is hard to do, that guitar rules, but this guitar is better. This guitar is a big instrument, keep that in mind. I think this actually may be one of the biggest dreadnoughts ever made while still being considered a dreadnought, I'll have to check on that but I think that's right. The saddle is just about all the way down, but oddly enough it also has been on every other D-35 Bluegrass I've ever seen, so that may be just how it goes for this model. The action on this particular model is always kind of formidable. The big Guild feel where everything has a "bigger is better" kind of ethos can take a second to get used to, but once you do it you never go back and nothing feels as full and substantial. Simple chords and ideas can have all the power they need to be impactful in a very Jackson Browne sort of way. It plays great, and it's got years ahead of it as an amazing songwriting companion. Beautiful guitar, and obviously rare to find in such great condition!
