About This Listing

Our Notes: Before there were Tama drums, there were Star drums.  The fellow who made them, name of Tama, produced Star drums in Japan from the mid-1960s until 1974 when he changed the name to TAMA.  Based on the badge design, this tom-tom likely from the mid to late 60's.  While the shell diameters are standard, the depths of the toms are non-standard.  The 13" tom is only about 8 3/4" deep instead of the normal 9".  Based on the reinforcement rings they do not seem to have been cut down.  Chalk it up to the metric system??  The tom sport only the top hoop, rods, lugs, and head.  Bottom hoops, rods, and heads are missing. The uniquely designed covering is in remarkably good condition on all of the drums, considering their age.  The shells appear to be mahogany; are thin with reinforcement rings.

Star was founded in 1962 by the Japanese company Tama Seisakusyo (later called Hoshino Gakki) and first started manufacturing drums under the Star brand name in 1965. In 1974 the company changed it’s name from STAR to "TAMA."

The Star drums features a satin finish, chrome metal bass drum hoop, 9-ply mahogany shell & inside laquered.
